Position Summary

The 4th and 5th REACH teacher provides STEM focused, experiential learning opportunities to students from Ann J Kellogg, Valley View, and Verona Elementaries. This position was created to develop a pipeline of BCPS students from the elementary schools to the Battle Creek Area Mathematics and Science Center in High School.

Position Responsibilities
  • Recruiting, communication, and coordination about the REACH program with students, parents, participating elementary school staff and administration.
  • Providing hands-on, collaborative, and experiential learning opportunities for 4th and 5th grade students designed to ignite interest and passion within STEM concepts, including but not limited to:
    • Engineering Design Process
    • STEM Careers
    • Coding
    • Robotics
    • STEM activities as determined by teacher
    • Participate in relevant professional development to build skills in STEM instruction and STEM concepts
  • Further developing the pipeline between the elementary schools and the BCAMSC
  • Building rapport with students from multiple buildings
  • Developing student awareness of work within a STEM environment
  • Track progress and outcomes, assessing individual capabilities and developing individual plans to help students increase their capacities.
  • Curriculum writing
  • Building a rapport with students using interpersonal communication skills in order for them to feel comfortable working in this type of environment.
  • Fostering critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities both individually and in teams.
  • Developing and running REACH informational sessions, parent nights, progress reports, and newsletters
  • Work with BCAMSC students and staff to build learning opportunities designed to help inspire students
Qualifications
  • Michigan Teaching Certification with a ZG Endorsement
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • A working understanding of conceptual STEM instruction
  • Willingness to learn STEM focused concepts
  • Basic coding skills, or a willingness to learn basic coding
  • Basic robotics skills, or a willingness to learn basic robotics (VEX)
  • A working knowledge of Project Based Learning
  • Interpersonal and professional speaking and writing communication skills
  • Curriculum Development
Salary:
  • $50,000 - $82,010 based on the current teacher salary schedule
Contract:
  • 188 days
