Harlem Village Academies is a community of educators working to build an urban K-12 school model based on the principles of progressive education. Located in Harlem, HVA is also the demonstration site for the Progressive Education Institute.

Joining a dynamic team of educators, the Elementary Literacy & Humanities Director will take our curriculum to the next level in order to improve instructional quality and drive significant student learning outcomes. The ideal candidate is a master teacher with a broad and deep knowledge of literacy, experience with curriculum design, and a passion for progressive pedagogy.

The Literacy & Humanities Director will:

Curriculum Development
  • Lead the adaptation and continual improvement of an engaging, challenging, integrated K-5 literacy & humanities curriculum that aligns with HVA’s progressive approach to pedagogy
  • Provide teachers with user-friendly resources to effectively modify and implement unit plans and lessons
  • Maintain systems to ensure curriculum materials are well-organized and continually revised based on feedback from teachers and leaders

Assessment Development
  • Develop and continually improve sophisticated assessments for literacy across the K-5 schools

Professional Learning
  • Design and lead high quality professional learning for both leaders and teachers that produces significant improvement in instruction
  • Model teaching for leaders and teachers
  • Provide in-class instructional coaching for leaders and teachers
Data and Analysis
  • Study data on an ongoing basis and provide analysis and proposed next steps
  • In collaboration with school principals and the network senior education leadership team, develop action plans based on data
Instructional Background
  • At least four years of teaching experience, seven or more years preferred
  • A proven track record of student achievement results
Curriculum and Assessment Experience
  • At least three years of experience in curriculum and assessment development
  • Understanding of progressive pedagogy
  • Experience developing a cohesive scope and sequence as well as designing high quality unit and lesson plans that can be implemented by teachers
  • Experience with common core assessment
Teacher Development
  • Experience coaching and developing teachers preferred
  • Maturity, humility, and strong work ethic – continually seeks to learn and improve
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Incredibly high excellence bar and ownership over results
  • Ability to see multiple projects with many moving parts through from beginning to end
  • Strong writing skills
  • Ability to work autonomously, as well as to take direction
  • Excellent project management skills, organizational skills, and acute attention to detail
