JOB SUMMARY & PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS
REPORTS TO: Classroom Teacher

DEPARTMENT NAME: Exceptional Education

JOB SUMMARY (2-3 sentences): Works directly with a classroom teacher to assist with the implementation of supports and services reflected in an individual education program (IEP). Provides support to teachers and students in a variety of tasks related to academics, behavior and physical logistics. Coaches and encourage students to actively engage in the process of learning and becoming more independent.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:List, in the order of time spent, the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.

Job Responsibility 1:Provides small group instruction under the guidance and supervision of certificated personnel.
Job Responsibility 2:Facilitates and models appropriate social interactions and behaviors among students.
Job Responsibility 3:Assists in the personal care of students such as feeding, diapering, lifting, etc.
Job Responsibility 4:Monitors, collects and records students’ behavioral and/or academic performance as directed by the teacher.
Job Responsibility 5:Actively engages with and consistently supervises all students throughout the day, e.g. attending a field trip, transitioning from class to class, escorting students to the restroom, etc.
Job Responsibility 6:Supervises groups of students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and/or other activities designated by the teacher or administrator.
Job Responsibility 7:Implements students IEPs, functional behavioral assessments, safety plans, and/or behavior intervention plans.
Job Responsibility 8:Attends and actively participates in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and understanding of special populations, including training for proper restraint procedures.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES, REQUIREMENTS, AND IMPACTS
DATA RESPONSIBILITY: “Data Responsibility” refers to information, knowledge, and conceptions obtained by observation, investigation, interpretation, visualization, and mental creation. Data are intangible and include numbers, words, symbols, ideas, concepts, and oral verbalizations.

Monitors and records data as directed by the teacher and/or administrator related to behavior, academics, and/or health and safety. Performs clerical functions for the purpose of supporting the teacher.

PEOPLE RESPONSIBILITY: “People Responsibility” refers to individuals who have contact with or are influenced by the position.

Demonstrates ability to be professional and work with a positive attitude. Demonstrates the ability to problem solve situations. Demonstrates the ability to report all absences to the principal, teacher, and/or secretary. Demonstrates the ability to submit absences to the substitute line. Exhibits professionalism in all areas such as, but not limited to; confidentiality, respect for students, peers, and supervisors, punctuality, good attendance, appropriate hygiene and appearance. Exhibits enthusiasm in the workplace.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS: “Mathematics” deals with quantities, magnitudes, and forms and their relationships and attributes by the use of numbers and symbols.

Competent basic math skills using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; computes ratios, rates, and percentages.

COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: “Communications” involves the ability to read, write, and speak.

Models grammatically correct spoken and written language (English). Respects the confidentiality of all information associated with students. Communicates effectively with all staff.

COMPLEXITY OF WORK: “Complexity of Work” addresses the analysis, initiative, ingenuity, creativity, and concentration required by the position and the presence of any unusual pressures.

Demonstrates the ability to problem solve effectively and remain calm in difficult situations.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS: “Impact of Decisions” refers to consequences such as damage to property, loss of data or property, exposure of the organization to legal liability, or injury or death to individuals.

Makes decisions with moderately serious impact - affects work unit and may affect other units or citizens.

EQUIPMENT USAGE: “Equipment Usage” refers to inanimate objects such as substances, materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, or products. A thing is tangible and has shape, form, and other physical characteristics.

Demonstrates willingness to use any equipment specific to the class, as directed by the teacher (any type of assistive technology including, but not limited to: brailler, computer, augmentative communication device, assistive listening device, etc.)

SAFETY OF OTHERS: “Safety of Others” refers to the responsibility for other people’s safety, either inherent in the job or to assure the safety of the general public.

Requires considerable responsibility for the safety and health of others and/or continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety. Responds to emergency situations immediately.
Exhibits knowledge of the school safety plan. Oversees safety of students on field trips. Follows correct procedures for lifting. Exhibits knowledge of student safety plans if applicable.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS



EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: “Education Requirements” refers to job specific training and education required for entry into the position.

High school diploma or GED. Must have “Highly Qualified” status from at least one of these measures: 1) 48 hours from an accredited college, 2) an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college, or 3) current “Paraprofessional Praxis” distinction.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: “Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations” refers to professional, state, or federal licenses, certifications, or registrations required to enter the position.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: “Experience Requirements” refers to the amount of work experience that is required for entry into the position that would result in reasonable expectation that the person can perform the tasks required by the position.

Previous work experience with children under the supervision of other adults required. Proficient in basic computer skills, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

More specific degree, certification, and experience requirements will be included in the position announcement as vacancies occur.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: “Physical Demands” refers to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Standing and walking: generally 6 hours per day (full functioning)
Lifting and carrying: frequently lifting/exerting 20 lbs and occasionally lifting/exerting 70 lbs
Push and pull: unlimited grasp and fingering, push wheel chair
Dexterity: ability to operate machines, tools or office equipment
Additional requirements: unlimited reaching to shoulder height; frequently climbs stairs; exposure to heat extremes.

Note: Requires medium to heavy work involving exerting up to 70 pounds of force on a frequent basis and exceptional dexterity and skill in operating machinery, tools, or equipment. Exhibit the ability to lift up to 70 lbs. Able to stand, walk and/or push a wheelchair for extended periods of time. Able to provide assistance and personal care to students. Able to restrain students in an emergency situation.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS: “Unavoidable Hazards” refers to unusual conditions in the work environment that may cause illness or injury.

The position is exposed to extreme heat/cold, wet or humid conditions, bright/dim lights, intense noise levels, vibration, fumes or noxious odors, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, traffic, and toxic or caustic chemicals. May be exposed to bodily fluids, disease, or pathogens. May receive unintentional injuries from aggressive students.

SENSORY (ADA) REQUIREMENTS: “Sensory Requirements” refers to hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell necessary to perform the tasks required by the position efficiently.

The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, and texture perception.
