Description:

  • Write external materials to promote and inform various audiences about KIPP Houston’s mission and approach
  • Develop, write, and distribute press releases and other materials as part of media/outreach strategy, and edit press releases from partner organizations that include KIPP Houston
  • Develop materials to support and manage high-priority communication to media, the community, and families
  • Create a catalogue of collateral for use in external communications such as grant proposals, visitors’ packets, and press articles
  • Collaborate with staff from the national KIPP Foundation on media stories
  • Manage relationships with local journalists (TV, print, and news blogs) and serve as an on-the-record spokesperson
  • Assist with preparation for productions/programming
  • Review and write blog posts, speeches, and talking points for KIPP leaders
  • Work in coordination with KIPP Houston regional leaders to assist schools with communication related to emergency situations (bus incidents, school incidents, tornado warnings, etc.)

Support Internal Communications
  • Coordinate and improve internal communication by aligning newsletters, weekly updates, and other communication tools
  • Plan and maintain communications calendar
  • Prepare students, families, and staff speakers for internal and external events
  • Complete other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
  • Bachelor’s degree and 5-7 or more years of communications-related experience.
  • Project management. Exceptional organizational and project management skills. Able to self-direct and prioritize among competing goals to create manageable work plans and initiate process improvements. Strong achievement orientation with exceptional time management skills and demonstrated ability to multi-task.
  • Communication. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal communication, including strong presentation skills.
  • Writing. Excellent writing and editing skills, including flexibility to write in different styles for various audiences.
  • Attention to detail. Meticulous attention to detail, commitment to accuracy, and a high-quality bar.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to establish relationships across the organization
    • Ability to plan and think strategically, coupled with willingness to execute and roll one’s sleeves up
    • Comfort with working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
    • Interest in continuing to develop skills and learning from others o Flexibility and willingness to contribute when necessary on projects outside of own department
    • Articulate, polished, and professional demeanor with strong work ethic, self-confidence, initiative, and leadership skills
    • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP Houston’s mission
    • Experience working in public education in low-income communities is a plus
    • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), and familiarity with Adobe Programs is helpful
    • Spanish language speaker is strongly preferred
