Role Overview

The Nutrition Education Manager is part of the Regional Services Team (RST) and is responsible for ensuring the overall team mission is accomplished which is to help remove the obstacles to teaching and learning, deliver great support and partnership to schools, RST faculty, parents, and students, and strike the right balance of structure and processes, respecting school/dept. input. The Child Nutrition department provides an environment that supports healthy food habits, nutrition education resources and activities for students and faculty while maintaining program integrity and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications:

To oversee and manage the educational opportunities provided to KIPP Houston Public School students as outlined by our district wellness policy and research based resources. Functions include various nutrition topic education, promotion planning and distribution, educational field trips, and providing clarification for incorrect assumptions and information. Update wide health and wellness initiatives; developing policies and procedures that insure all records, regulations, services, and safety for KIPP Houston Public Schools are being followed; and be a point of contact for the Child Nutrition Department.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Work closely with the Child Nutrition Director in the implementation of the District’s wellness policy, nutrition education and marketing and promotional programs.
  • Assess customer preferences, industry trends, and current research to assist vendor with menu planning that encourage participation in the School Nutrition program.
  • Plan and implements nutrition education programs throughout the school district.
  • Facilitate communications and to inspect quality of services and adherence to federal, State and local laws and regulations and district requirements.
  • Work closely with vendor with menu planning software, food production records, point of sale.
  • Agency guidelines for meal eligibility and reimbursement of federal funds.
  • Assist with Program (NSLP, NSBP, Snack, Grant initiatives) implementation and compliance.
  • Works closely with the Child Nutrition Director and vendor in reviewing the special menus for students with special needs diets and food allergies; coordinates diet needs school clinic coordinators.
  • Maintain accurate reports of daily, monthly, and annual activity records.
  • Distributes and organizes promotion material in conjunction with annual calendar of events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of School Nutrition.
  • Help Child Nutrition Director find innovative ways to build the financial strength of the program
    • Identify, write and manage child nutrition program education grants (i.e. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program grants, 3E’s, HUSSC, etc.).
    • Identify and manage innovative initiatives that drive higher student participation and engagement.
  • Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.
    • Attend professional development and growth activities to keep abreast of innovative techniques for food service operations.
    • Work independently with little direction.
    • Other duties as assigned and meet schedules and time lines.
  • Maintain records, compile and verify data and prepare reports.
    • Prepare necessary data for processing food service invoices and TDA reports.
    • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
    • Ensure compliance with federal and state law and board policy in food service area.
    • Review food production records from area managers and ensure completion according to TDA regulatory requirements.
    • Develop and maintain written department procedures for all food service operations.
    • Manage implementation of counting and claiming and reporting software vendor.
  • Prepare and deliver oral Nutrition Education and/or Compliance presentations.
    • Provide relevant program and compliance information to Office Managers and school staff
    • Deliver Nutrition Education presentations to parents and students, when applicable
    • Work closely with clinic coordinator in identifying and assisting with food allergies in the region.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Nutrition from an accredited institution.
  • Registered and licensed Dietitian preferred
  • 2-3 years of related work experience required.
  • School or non-profit operations or business management experience a plus.
  • Strong computer skills required.
  • Excellent customer service, written and verbal communication skills required.
  • ServSafe Certification Required
