Special Education Paraprofessional

DSST Public Schools (DSST) seeks a Secondary Special Education Paraprofessional to join one of the leading charter school organizations in Colorado. DSST Public Schools mission is to transform urban public education by eliminating educational inequity and preparing all students for success in college and the 21st century.

Overview of Position: The Secondary Special Education paraprofessional supports the educational, behavioral, social-emotional, physical and daily living needs of middle and high school level students with disabilities in integrated, resource, self-contained and community settings. Assists in conducting testing and assessment, multi-media activities, record-keeping, computer operation, discipline, and other activities. May assist with lifting and transporting of students, as well as daily living activities such as toileting, diapering, feeding, and personal hygiene as trained and directed.

Essential functions:

  • Collecting data on and monitoring Individualized Education Plan goals
  • Implementing a daily communication system between the school and the home
  • Communicating daily with families
  • Maintaining confidentiality with student records and ensuring that information regarding students is shared at appropriate times
  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with teachers
  • Reading tests to students
  • Providing extended time to students for assessments
  • Facilitating interactions between students and staff and students and their peers
  • Collaborating with special education and general education teachers to implement a daily behavior contract and carefully tracking progress on the contract

Experience Required:

Paraprofessionals are required to have transcripts verifying at least 48 semester hours OR a conferred degree from an accredited college or university.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is active and may require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and crouching throughout the day. The employee must lift and/or move items up to 30 pounds. The employee must have sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

DSST Public Schools Overview:
DSST Public Schools (DSST) operates a network of tuition-free, open-enrollment public STEM charter schools. All DSST Public schools are part of the Denver Public Schools (DPS) district and students are admitted through DPS’ School Choice program. The student population across the DSST network is 80 percent students of color and 64 percent low income. This year, DSST will serve approximately 5,000 students at twelve schools on seven campuses: Byers, Cole, College View, Conservatory Green, Green Valley Ranch, Henry and Stapleton. DSST has been approved to open ten additional schools and four campuses by 2022. At full enrollment, DSST Public Schools will serve over 10,000 students, one quarter of the DPS 6-12 population, and will help more than double the number of four year college-ready DPS graduates. 2016 marked the ninth consecutive year the senior class has earned 100% acceptance to a four-year college. The continued success of the DSST network has gained local and national attention.
