POSITION SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for the oversight of the Center-based Serious Emotional Disabilities (SED) programs throughout School District 27J as well as for 27J students attending out of district programs in order for them to provide high quality programming and professional practices.  This individual will provide knowledge, guidance, and support to building administrators and their staff for special education students with emotional and/or behavioral challenges in the area of professional development, programming, and service delivery to increase student achievement in accordance with the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Exceptional Children's Education Act (ECEA) as well as School District 27J policies and procedures.  This position is responsible for the oversight of district special education Mental Health providers to ensure high quality systems/programs are available to effectively respond to mental health and social affective student needs to allow students to remain in their school of choice to the extent possible.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible to recruit, hire, supervise and evaluate staff for assigned programs:
    1. Motor Team (Occupational and Physical Therapists)
    2. Behavior Coach/Support Team
    3. School Psychologist (including interns) and School Social Workers as determined by the Special Education Director
  2. Coordinate and conduct Center-based SED program evaluations as required by ECEA to ensure quality services as well as for the purpose of developing proposals and/or action plans to refine program design/practices to support increased student outcomes:
    1. Collaborate with building administrators and school special education staff to complete the SED Quality Program Indicator Self-Assessment
    2. Coordinate a team of 27J staff to complete the SED Quality Program Indicators evaluation
    3. As appropriate collaborate with building administrators and school special education staff to development an action plan to address areas of concern from the program evaluation process
  3. Coordinates and ensures that coaching, training, and professional development opportunities are available to building administrators and special education service providers (certified & classified) to ensure appropriate, rigorous, quality programming that will increase student achievement, graduation rate and positive post school outcomes for special education students with mental health and/or behavioral issues.
  4. Collaborate with community agency personnel to secure services for students with disabilities (primarily SED) whose IEP team determined they need for a more restrictive placement
    1. As appropriate attend meetings (treatment review, IEP or other) to ensure appropriate services are provided that will support student progress towards targeted goals such that they can return to a 27J school program
    2. Serve as the liaison between the community agency personnel and the student’s 27J school program to assist with transitions
  5. Assist in the coordination of Mental Health Providers to effectively respond to crisis situations within buildings and/or across the district as necessary
  6. Supervise the Motor and Health Services Team to ensure that procedures and services are available and in alignment with federal and state regulations
  7. Supervise the Behavior Support Team to ensure that procedures and services are available and in alignment with department goals as well as with district policies/procedures
  8. In collaboration with and on behalf of an IEP team, present recommendations to the Director of Special Education regarding significantly restrictive placement requests
  9. May be called upon to support and assist building 504 Coordinators as directed by the Director of Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required: Master’s degree in a Mental Health Related Field (counseling, school psychology, social work, etc.)
  • Required: Must have, or have the ability to obtain within 3 yrs. of hire date (demonstrate progress towards completion), a current Special Education Director license from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE)
  • Required: A minimum of 5 years of experience working in a Mental Health related field working with children and/or adolescents
  • Prefer: Minimum of three years’ experience working in an educational environment
  • Prefer: Applicant to hold or able to obtain DORA certification, but not required
