We are searching for an experienced Teacher, Metro Middle & High (Juvenile Corrections Program: Detention School) at our Dane Cty Detention Center facility.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Opportunity:

Schools were not designed for students, especially those considered “at-risk,” to thrive. It’s no surprise that most urban school districts have long struggled to connect this population of youth to a path leading towards a thriving future. From justice-involved youth to those that have left the system all-together, for whatever reason, attempts to re-engage young people struggling to find a path forward are often after-thoughts at best. We can change this. With an unwavering commitment to ensuring that all students are college, career, and community ready, and a growing advocacy from passionate groups throughout the Madison community, MMSD is poised to take collective and bold action towards redesigning how the system serves this “at-risk” population.

To lead this important work, the Office of Youth Re-Engagement, a community-based MMSD team charged with the design, implementation, and sustainability of student-centered programs, practices, and systems aimed at supporting Opportunity Youth (i.e., justice-involved youth, youth that have left the system before earning a high school diploma, and youth that are significantly off-track towards graduation). Working in collaboration with Dane County juvenile correctional staff, the Metro Middle & High teacher will serve as a program to support and prepare Opportunity Youth toward college, career, and community readiness through innovative instruction and socio-emotional re-development through human-centered and culturally relevant approaches.
The Metro Middle & High teacher will work closely with the Dane County Juvenile Corrections Program, Office of Youth Re-Engagement and community partners towards the creation and execution of a bold strategy to achieve a vision that finds all Opportunity Youth on a path towards a high school diploma and thriving future. Among other charges, this out-of-the-box thinker will create, guide and facilitate innovative and accessible curriculum to strengthen academic programming, and reshape the current perceived narrative of Opportunity Youth.

Responsibilities:
Staff positioned will work to develop a high school completion plan that meets the current academic needs of students, engages students in achieving graduation requirements through innovative learning opportunities, and supports the social emotional re-development of the student, school and community. Staff plan and provide culturally relevant and innovative learning experiences for students. The person in this position strengthens and bridges content across traditional subject areas through approachable, ground-breaking methods (ie. project-based learning) that puts Opportunity Youth and future goals at the center of the learning experiences. We are seeking individuals committed to empowering students with the ability to identify and solve problems, in and outside of classroom walls.
Specific activities will vary, evolve, and be dynamic akin to a tenacious startup, but core responsibilities of the Detention School Teacher will include:
Works to design and implement bold, innovative, and student-centered curriculum aimed at guiding Opportunity Youth towards a thriving future.
Design and facilitate experiences that push students to ideate and generate out-of-the box thinking and solutions
Create strong assessment metrics and systematically collect, analyze, and use data to make classroom pivots, evaluate curriculum and support student growth.
Engage students, families and staff through a practiced culturally-responsive approach, with an aim to increase accessibility, responsiveness, transparency, and communication in regards to academics and behavior.
Collect, monitor and manage record-maintenance systems (student progress, attendance, etc.) for students enrolled in Detention School educational programming
Effectively communicate conceptual ideas, detailed designs, and design rationale both verbally and visually
Utilize design-thinking methodology to elicit pioneering ideas among team, school-based design teams, and other district and community partners

You’ve also had opportunities to refine your leadership skills, and know how to engage with and guide senior colleagues to provide input, identify priorities, and make decisions. You take the work seriously, but not yourself - and you expect others to do the same!




Required Qualifications:

License to teach: Regular Education license (Grades 5-12) and Alternative Education license
