TEACHER OF THE SEVERELY HANDICAPPED
STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION
CLASS TITLE:
Teacher of the Severely Handicapped

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned administrator, provide a special education classroom for severely
handicapped students to instruct and demonstrate essential skills and information necessary for functioning as
independently as possible.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Participates in the preparation of the IEP and implements written instructional plans for students.
Collaborate with staff, parents, school officials and other service providers.
Maintains complete records of change in behavior as stated in objectives and methods used.
Assesses and evaluates students and coordinates auxiliary services when necessary.
Conducts parent conferences.
Participates in various in-services to upgrade skills necessary to modify behavior.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Child development.
Learning theory.
Behavior modification.
Instructional materials and methods.
ABILITY TO:
Communicate educational goals and objectives to parents.
Implement educational plans.
Organize instruction based on individual and group needs.
Assess and diagnose educational deficits and growth.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree.
Special education teaching experience preferred.
LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California teaching credential authorizing service to severely handicapped students.
EL authorization.

Pass an employer-paid pre-employment physical/drug screening.
Department of Justice clearance.
Employee must arrange their own transportation. If using their own vehicle in the course of employment, must
have proof of insurance.
ENVIRONMENT:
Classroom environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Seeing to read instructional materials, rules and policies and other printed matter.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations.
Walking over rough and uneven terrain, play yards and school grounds.
Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling light-medium weighted objects.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
