Excel Academy Charter Schools is partnering with the Sposato Graduate School of Education (SGSE) to offer a unique teacher training experience for aspiring urban educators. As an Excel Teaching Fellow, you will have the opportunity to simultaneously gain both real-world and academic experience that is designed to prepare you to take on a role as a lead classroom teacher after one calendar year.
The Excel Fellow Role
Excel Teaching Fellows will function as members of the school-based instructional team at one of the network’s three middle school campuses. The role is a one-year commitment. Fellows will have the option to apply for a lead teacher role at an Excel school the following school year if they choose, but a permanent position is not guaranteed. School-based duties and responsibilities for Fellows include:
- Teaching and developing curriculum for 1-2 elective courses;
- Supporting instruction in the classroom of a host teacher;
- Providing regular coverage for absent teachers during instructional and non-instructional time;
- Supervising a weekly after-school program and/or extracurricular activity;
- Providing operational support as needed; and
- Serving as an advisor to a cohort of students.
Additionally, each Fellow will be assigned a host teacher and a coach. The host teacher is someone who teaches in the subject area that the Fellow is pursuing. This teacher’s classroom is the Fellow’s home base, although Fellows will have the opportunity to observe in other classrooms as well. In the spring, Fellows will complete their student teaching in the host teacher’s classroom. Fellows will be observed regularly and receive feedback on their teaching from both their host teacher and their coach (who may be the same person).
Sposato Graduate School of Education (SGSE) Coursework & Credentials
Fellows will enroll in SGSE’s two-year teacher preparation program and will take classes and engage in SGSE training in addition to their Excel Teaching Fellow responsibilities. This coursework will result in several teaching credentials over the course of the two-year program, including:
At the end of year one: An initial Massachusetts teaching license in one of four academic content areas (math, English, social studies, or science), and a Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) endorsement
At the end of year two: A Master’s degree in Effective Teaching
Obtaining these credentials entails:
- Attending and passing classes during years one and two. In year one, classes will take place 2 evenings per week at an off-site location in downtown Boston or a school site;
- SGSE coursework and group practice on Saturdays in the fall during year one;
- Passing the SGSE Gateway assessment in December, which entails teaching a model lesson and being observed and assessed by SGSE evaluators; and
- Attaining satisfactory scores from SGSE evaluators during classroom evaluations in year two.
Timeline for the Fellow Year (Year One of SGSE)
- Attend Excel’s New Staff Orientation in early August;
- Observe and assist in the host teacher’s classroom;
- Plan and lead routine teaching responsibilities in the host teacher’s classroom; and
- Observe other Excel teachers for at least one hour daily.
- Lead partial blocks of instruction in your host's classroom using plans made by other teachers;
- Plan and execute short lessons; and
- Continue to observe other Excel teachers for one hour daily.
- Take SGSE Gateway assessment (early January);
- Plan and execute complete lessons/units of instruction starting in early February; and
- Teach at least one hour per day in host teacher’s classroom.
- Participate in a 2-3 week summer school student teaching placement at an Excel campus.
Compensation & Tuition
Excel Teaching Fellows are paid a base salary of $20,000 annually and are eligible for all full-time employee benefits, including health insurance. SGSE participants will pay Sposato tuition in the aggregate amount of $9,000, to be paid in six equal installments of $1,500 each Sposato every six months, with the first installment due on or before March 15, 2019.
A Bachelor’s degree is required;
- Some experience working in an urban public or charter school and/or with urban students preferred, but not required;
- An unwavering commitment to and belief in the mission of Excel Academy Charter Schools, including Excel’s values and educational model;

- The ability to focus and thrive in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment;
