The physical therapist will implement school board and special education policies and procedures in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) for students with disabilities under the direction of the administration assigned to the Student Support Services Division. The focus of therapy is not rehabilitative in nature, but viewed as a needed educational support for students. The physical therapist will provide physical therapy services to students with disabilities as outlined in the Individual Education Plan (IEP), as enrolled in a WCSD special education program or as referred for assessment. This person will be expected to adhere to the WCSD Professional Domains and Standards for Licensed Employees and report directly to the assigned supervisor of the Physical Therapy Department.

  1. Maintain accurate records and provide annual progress reports as needed.
  2. Work professionally with administrators, staff, parents/guardians, and community.
  3. Maintain a safe and orderly therapy area.
  4. Consult with outside agencies/therapists regarding therapy reports (parents/guardians permission).
  5. Participate in other job-related duties and activities related to the position as assigned.
  6. Adhere to professional, ethical and legal standards of practice.
  7. Develop, implement and coordinate the physical therapy program within the LEA including philosophy, vision, departmental procedures and goals.
  8. Evaluate student using appropriate tests, skilled professional observation and supplementary information from other agencies and records.
  9. Interpret assessment findings and appropriately convey information to parents and school teams.
  10. Participate with the school team to develop Individualized Education Programs and Section 504 Plans.
  11. Develop and implement intervention strategies.
  12. Develop physical management plan for daily classroom routines and train staff in its safe implementation.
  13. Plan for transition from school to community, preparing student to function independently from therapy service when targeted outcomes are achieved.
  14. Evaluate and report on student progress.
  15. Communicate and consult with school staff, parents, administrators, physicians, community and other professionals.
  16. Serve as resource to parent, school team, staff and administration on disabling conditions and their effects on education.
  17. Collaborate with community based therapists and other healthcare providers for effective coordination of service.
  18. Assess need and recommend assistive technology necessary for function at school.
  19. Contribute to planning safe transportation of students with disability.
  20. Provide consultation regarding emergency evacuation of students with disability.
  21. Participate with improving school accessibility and planning environmental modification.
  22. Maintain student service, administrative and other departmental records in accordance with Physical Therapy Practice Act as well as school district, State and Federal policies.
  23. Participate in budget planning and policy development.
  24. Document need and advocate for personnel and equipment.
  25. Procure, maintain and inventory equipment, materials and supplies.
  26. Seek regular opportunities for professional growth.
  27. Provide clinical educational opportunities for students of physical therapy.


  1. Guide the learning process toward achievement of established IEP goals.
  2. Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff.
  3. Develop a climate that promotes positive learning conditions.
  4. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding plans for educationally related physical therapy services.
  5. Communicate effectively both written and orally.
  6. Maintain and improve professional competence.
  7. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy Program from an accredited college or university in Physical Therapy.


  1. Pass an examination approved by the Physical Therapy Board of Nevada.

Knowledge of: Knowledge of physical therapy principles, theory, methods and evidence based practice; Knowledge of effective practice, clinical decision making, outcomes based intervention and their proper application in the educational environment; Knowledge of areas of practice specific to pediatrics, including child development and specific diagnoses; Knowledge of administrative management practices; Ability to plan, implement, administer and coordinate a physical therapy program, from eligibility determination to exit, within an LEA; Ability to select and administer appropriate assessment tools and interpret results of assessment. Knowledge of current legal mandates, including: Federal and State law, compliance issues, confidentiality requirements, funding procedures and requirements.

Skill at: Ability to plan, coordinate, implement, administer and coordinate a physical therapy program, from eligibility determination to exit, within an LEA; Ability to select and administer appropriate assessment tools and interpret results of assessment; Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and ability to provide instruction in a student’s living situation (home, school, and community) that may affect the student’s adjustment and ability to make appropriate use of the educational experience; Work cooperatively with students, parents/guardians, peers, administration, and community members; Guide the learning process toward achievement of established IEP goals; Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff; Develop a climate that promotes positive learning conditions; Communicate with parents/guardians regarding plans for educationally related physical therapy services; Communicate effectively both written and orally; Maintain and improve professional competence; Skill in selecting and providing a wide range of intervention strategies and monitoring their effectiveness; Physical ability to execute job responsibilities that may include: transferring and/or lifting students or equipment, managing equipment.

License/Certification: Possess or be able to acquire a Nevada license issued by the Nevada Department of Education (optional). Possess a license(s) issued by the Physical Therapy Board of Nevada (State of Nevada Department of Health). Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Nevada driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the District.
