POSITON TITLE: Secondary School Teacher

DEPARTMENT: Instruction

FLSA: Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY: Teaches one or more subjects such as English, Science, Mathematics or Social Studies to students in public or private secondary schools.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Bachelors Degree
  2. Certificate to teach from appropriate state agency.
  3. Completion of teaching internship.
  4. Strong written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Teaches content and skills in the assigned area of instruction to secondary students, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instructs students in subject matter, utilizing various teaching methods, such as lecture and demonstration; uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentation.
  3. Prepares teaching outline for course of study; assigns lessons and corrects homework papers.
  4. Administers tests to evaluate progress, records results and issues reports to inform parents of student’s progress.
  5. Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  6. Adapts subject material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students.
  7. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aides appropriate to the interest and maturity level of students; maintains required inventory records.
  8. Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual pupil.
  9. Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions and other class activities.
  10. Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  11. Evaluates each pupil’s progress in the area of study.
  12. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  13. Identifies pupil needs, and cooperatives with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  14. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  15. Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.

  1. Works with students and other classroom teachers in such activities as preparing materials for the school newspaper or yearbook, assisting with PTO Programs, or coordinating entries in essay contests.
  2. Administers or monitors group tests
  3. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs and implement same.
  4. Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities to include in and out of school activities.
  5. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
  6. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  7. Other assigned tasks required of the immediate supervisor.
  8. Keep attendance records
  9. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
