Special Education Assistant II-(Part Time)
Camino Nuevo Charter Academy (CNCA) is a community of high-performing public schools that utilizes a comprehensive approach to prepare students from preschool through high school for success in college and in life. We integrate academic rigor, community, family, and wellness to empower students to thrive in a culturally connected and changing world. Founded in 2000, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy students represent the neighborhood of MacArthur Park west of downtown Los Angeles, a community that is one of the most under-resourced and densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Currently, CNCA has eight campuses that serve over 3,000 students from pre-K through 12th grade.
Description: The job of the Special Education Teaching Assistant II was established for the purpose(s) of working with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a certificated teacher in the supervision and instruction of students; assisting students by modeling the necessary skills to perform assignments; following educational and specific behavioral plans; modeling appropriate behaviors and interactions with students and staff; and of assignments including classroom support, lunchroom, playground, etc.
Special Education Assistant II will perform a full range of duties, including but not limited to:
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the classroom teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Communicates with teachers and other district personnel for the purpose of assisting and evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Provides, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction of students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. self-esteem, behavioral skills, daily living skills, etc.) for the purpose of implementing goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensuring student’s success.
- Documents student’s daily activities (e.g. behavior, completed assignments, on/off tasks, etc.) for the purpose of completing daily logs and student’s hourly activities.
- Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
- Models conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening and everyday interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Monitors student’s daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g. class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Assists the assigned staff member(s) in all aspects of daily programming including, but not necessarily limited to: social, academic, behavioral and self-help growth and development.
- Assists in the direct supervision of children in the assigned program as directed by the teacher or administrator (e.g. diaper changing, bus loading, classroom assignments, lunch, recess, etc.)
- Assist students with toileting, diaper changing, eating, and other personal hygiene functions
- Employees may be exposed to students who may ask inappropriate personal questions; display socially unacceptable personal behaviors; insult your physical appearance, age, sex and/or race; use profanity and/or sexually explicit phrases; exhibit defiance, dishonesty, threats, accusations and/or theft; assaultive behaviors and self-destructive behaviors.
- Employees may also be exposed to student’s bodily fluids, including feces, urine, vomit, semen, vaginal discharge etc.
- Some students may need assistance with toileting, diaper changing, eating, and other personal hygiene functions, which may increase the exposure to bodily fluids.
Must have knowledge of:
- Working with emotionally physically and/or mentally impaired students.
- Maintaining composure and confidentially under stressful situations.
- Adapting to changing work priorities.
- Working as part of a team.
- Applying common sense and understanding to carry out instructions.
- Variables in standardized situations with problems involving a few concrete.
- Effectively presenting information in one-to- one and group situations to students and working with frequent interruptions.
- Appropriate behavior management strategies
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force to push, pull, drag, or otherwise move objects.
- Ability to lift, move, and position students of up to 100 pounds and 12 years of age, with assistance.
- This type of work requires frequent and continuous standing and walking, for extended periods of time.
Applicants who possess the following skills will make the strongest candidates:
- BA degree in an appropriate discipline
- 3-5 years of directly related experience or training working with children with special needs
- Effective record-keeping techniques.
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
- Interpersonal skills in using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Successful experience working with diverse populations with special needs and alternative placements.
- Bilingual Spanish/English not required but preferred.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certificate, highly desired.
Salary based on experience: $17-$20
Work Hours: 25-29 hrs per week
