About the Position

826michigan is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and creative Program Manager to lead and grow our  in-school writing projects and field trips roadshow programs in Detroit. With supervision from the Director of Programs, the Program Manager will supervise planning and day-to-day delivery of our Detroit programs, with duties including but not limited to:


  • Serve as coordinator for 826michigan’s visits to school visits and implement classroom-based writing projects at schools in the city of Detroit in Fall 2022:

    • Coordinate field trips roadshow (short-term creative writing workshops in classrooms) program, including scheduling, communicating with teachers, preparing and implementing lessons and activities, tracking and reporting program data, and training and communicating with volunteers.

    • Coordinate in-school writing and publishing program, including day-to-day operations, teacher meetings, preparing lessons and activities, volunteer management, special projects and publications, and volunteer training and communication.

  • Manage Detroit-based teaching artist(s) and program staff as 826michigan’s programs expand to include new schools each academic year:

    • Support in new staff member training, weekly supervision meetings and feedback, goal setting, and Detroit-team development.


  • Serve as primary contact for Detroit-based programs, fostering relationships between 826michigan and Detroit-based students and guardians; between 826michigan and public and charter school administrators and teachers; between 826michigan and community organizations:

    • Steward and deepen collaborative partnerships with community organizations when applicable, with a focus on our primary partnerships with University Prep Schools.

    • Maintain a strong culture of community engagement through regular and effective communication and events with parents, guardians, teachers, administrators, and students.

Management & Collaboration

  • Supervise teaching artists, program interns, and volunteers related to Detroit programs.

  • Collaborate with Volunteer Manager in volunteer recruitment, training, and recognition as relates to Detroit programs.

  • As needed, support the organization as a whole through participation in donor meetings, appropriate marketing support, and event attendance.
