STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION
CLASS TITLE: Para Educator- Specialized Services- JFK

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual
or small groups of severely handicapped students who may have extreme behavioral issues in a classroom;
Provide direct instruction, monitor, and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; assist
students in developing various self-help, behavior, social and community skills.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Provides direct instruction for severely handicapped students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher;
Confer with teachers to plan and prepare appropriate educational activities, equipment, and materials to support
students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, collect and review student data such as strengths,
methods, strategies used in support of goals practices and related activities.

Provide instruction, assistance, and supervision for severely handicapped students in social, gross motor, fine
motor, behavior, and self-help skills; on and off the bus, at recess, meals, on field trips and other times as needed;
assist students safely in the community.
Observe and control behavior and interaction of students according to approved procedures, report progress
regarding student performance and behavior. Participate with a team in the implementation of behavioral plans.

Communicates with students using speech appropriate to the student’s level of understanding including, but not
limited to, verbal, picture/symbol systems, technology, functional signs, and entry level sign language.

Prepare lessons and instructional materials for individual students as directed by the teacher; maintain daily
records, completes forms, logs and paperwork required for reporting.
Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual
equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing, collecting supplies, and materials.
Providing emotional and physical support to students; assist with feeding children and toileting activities
including toilet training and diapering.
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; assist in
maintaining a clean and orderly classroom environment.
Oversee student activities; lead and monitor playground activities and movement education as assigned.
Participates physically with students in activities as needed, including but not limited to: climbing play structures,
making rapid movements to prevent injury, and pursuing students who elope.

Participate in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
Comply with Stanislaus County Office of Education Board Policies and Administrative Regulations.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Operate various office, instructional, and therapeutic equipment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and at least two years experience, paid or voluntary,
working with children/individuals with disabilities; AND one of the following: possession of an Associate’s degree
or higher, at least 48 college semester units or pass the (ESSA) Every Student Succeeds Act exam.
LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Complete approved SCOE Crisis Intervention Program within six (6) months of employment and maintain valid
certification.
Some positions in this class may be required to possess bilingual skills in a designated second language. Some
positions in this class may be required to possess sign language skills.
ENVIRONMENT:
Specialized school and classroom environment for students with special needs.

Indoor/outdoor work environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Lifting medium weighted objects; Physical strength sufficient to lift a student weighing 45 pounds and larger
students with assistance

Physical stamina and mobility sufficient to move about the school environment/campus and respond to emergency
situations

Physical, mental, and emotional tolerance to be exposed to noise generated by students in an enclosed environment

Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and to reach overhead, sit on floor, climb, and move
quickly or run after a child in an emergency situation
Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate specialized apparatus and standard office and classroom
equipment.
Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.

Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
