UTILITY WORKER
STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION

CLASS TITLE:
Utility Worker
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, to perform general utility work in connection with the building and grounds maintenance, basic
groundskeeping, custodial duties, food service preparation and kitchen work at a designated site; working independently or
with a team; and to perform related work as assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assists all staff with maintenance, custodial and food service.
Assists skilled maintenance workers in projects by holding, lifting, positioning, transporting and securing materials and
equipment.
Maintains interior and exterior safety of all facilities during all seasons, such as removing snow, ice, wildfire hazards, pest
control.
Uses power and hand tools to do simpler tasks.
Performs general maintenance work on buildings, equipment, vehicles and furnishing.
Operates light trucks or other equipment to pick up or deliver equipment and supplies, including operation of box truck to
pick up and deliver luggage for participants. Operation for all vehicles will include pre trip inspection according to
established procedures and reporting of all safety concerns to lead or supervisor. (SCOE Delivery Driver)
Perform general custodial to all buildings, such as: sweep, scrub, and wipe all surfaces; vacuum, refinish floors; shampoo,
spot clean carpets; restock supplies as needed; performs seasonal deep cleaning such as graffiti removal, cobwebbing, dust
removal, refinishing floors, decks, cleaning exterior walls. (SCOE Custodian I)
Groundskeeping work, such as: Operate a variety of light or heavy power and ground equipment such as tractors, trucks,
weed eaters, blowers, mowers, sweepers, power pressure sprayers, chain saws and other equipment used in grounds
maintenance work; utilize standard gardening hand tools. (SCOE Grounds Worker I)
Preform and monitor routine pest control duties as needed and according to established procedures. (SCOE Grounds Worker
I)
Moves and hauls furniture, school equipment and maintenance supplies.
Lock and unlock doors and gates according to established procedures (Custodian I)
Operates and cleans equipment, appliances and tools used for custodial, maintenance and food service.
Clean and sanitize food preparation and storage areas, food containers and other food service equipment.
Assists with periodic inventories, inspections and preventative maintenance as assigned.
May assist in the preparation, cooking and serving of food.
Reports unsafe conditions and needed repairs to supervisor.
Perform related maintenance, custodial, groundskeeping and food service duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Operation and use of hand and power tools used in the maintenance of buildings and grounds. Operation and use of a variety
of kitchen appliances and food service equipment.
Methods and materials used in the maintenance of buildings and facilities. General safety procedures and practices.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Proper lifting techniques.
ABILITY TO:
Learn to perform general maintenance, grounds, custodial and food service duties.
Safely operate a variety of vehicles, equipment, appliances, tools used in building maintenance and food service operations.
Handle a variety of work orders and complete work on schedule. Keep basic work records and make simple reports.

Perform moderately heavy physical labor.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and students.
Pass employer-paid pre-employment physical/drug screening.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSE REQUIRED:
Holding or obtaining a California approved and accredited food safety certificate is required.
Valid California Driver's License with clean driving record. H6 DMV Readout Required.
Be insurable and maintain insurability.
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor environment.
Seasonal heat and cold and adverse weather conditions. Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
Exposure to cleaning chemicals and fumes
Working around a variety of equipment, including knives, slicers or other sharp objects.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Dexterity of hand and fingers to operate a variety of custodial, grounds, maintenance tools, and equipment.
Walking, standing, driving for extended period of times.
Seeing to perform all duties.
Carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling of medium heavy objects/equipment
Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching
Reaching overhead, above the shoulder and horizontally
Climbing ladders, working from heights
HAZARDS:
Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
Heat from equipment and environment.
Exposure to very hot foods, equipment and metal objects
Working with knives, chainsaws, lawnmowers, slicers and other sharp objects and pinching hazards
Exposure to cleaning fumes and chemicals
