SUBSTITUTE HEAD START ASSISTANT

CLASS TITLE:
Substitute Head Start Assistant
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of program staff, assist in implementing the child development program for preschool aged
children; provide support to students and staff.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive child development program for preschool aged children; assist
in implementing suitable learning experiences for students; lead small groups of students in classroom
activities.
Participate in the implementation of individual student programs; assist in observing and recording student
development and progress.
Assist students with developing positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults; serve as a positive
role model for students.
Provide support to students and staff; learn individual interests of children.
Supervise and participate in playground activities.
Perform assigned clerical tasks in support of the program such as lunch counts.
Assist in setting up, monitoring and cleaning program facilities.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Policies and objectives of assigned program.
Child growth and development principles.
Record-keeping techniques.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
Operation of various instructional equipment.
ABILITY TO:
Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive child development program for preschool aged children.
Provide support to students and staff.
Lead classroom activities as assigned.
Work effectively with various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.



Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Abide by schedules.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Operate various instructional equipment.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school required. Enrollment in college for the purpose of completing a Child
Development Associate Teacher Permit or higher level permit preferred.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
May be required to provide own transportation.
ENVIRONMENT:
Classroom environment.
Constant interruptions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Seeing to monitor students and read a variety of materials.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
Standing for extended periods of time.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate specialized apparatus (e.g. latches, levers and switches on certain
devices like gates, cribs and playground equipment) and standard office and classroom equipment.
Pushing, pulling and lifting light-medium weighted objects.
Frequently standing, walking and sitting.
