Special Education Teacher / Academic Interventionist
Location: Central Elementary School - SSU Program run by KCSILC
Terms of Employment: Full time, 10 month position - temporary if hired after contractual start date for teachers
Reports to: Principal of Kent County Intensive Learning Center
Salary: Current teacher salary schedule
Position Overview:
The academic interventionist provides targeted academic support and specialized instruction to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This role is critical in closing achievement gaps and ensuring that students with disabilities receive equitable, high-quality education tailored to their individual needs. The interventionist collaborates closely with education teachers, paraprofessionals, families and service providers to implement effective interventions that align with each student's learning goals. The person in this role will act as the testing coordinator, ensuring that district and state assessments are completed in a timely manner.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide direct instruction in small-group or one-on-one settings for students with disabilities across core academic subjects, particularly in reading and/or mathematics
- Collaborate with teachers to design and implement differentiated instructional strategies
- Develop and deliver interventions aligned with IEP goals and curriculum standards
- Utilize data from standardized and informal assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
- Assist in the development, review, and implementation of IEPs and progress reports
- Support compliance with IDEA requirements
- Maintain accurate documentation of services provided, student progress, and communication with stakeholders
- Participate in IEP meetings, student support team (SST) meetings and professional development sessions
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, goals, and strategies for support at home
- Implement assistive technology and other accommodations as outlined in IEPs
- Testing coordinator
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s degree in education, special education, or a related field.
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and other relevant special education laws and regulations.
- Strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Education or a related field required; Master's degree preferred
- Valid Delaware teaching certification in Special Education
- Strong understanding of special education laws (IDEA) and instructional accommodations
- Proficiency in designing and delivering data-driven interventions for students with diverse learning needs
- Familiarity with evidence-based instructional practices and progress monitoring tools
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including educators, therapists, administrators, and families
- Culturally responsive and trauma-informed teaching practices
- Commitment to educational equity and inclusion for students with disabilities
- Organizational skills for maintaining student records and delivering consistent services
