STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION
JOB TITLE: INTERPRETER/TRANSLATOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a program administrator, facilitate communication, which may be both oral and
written, between non-English speaking families, students and county office staff.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Interprets orally at meetings, including IEPs, IFSP, parent-teacher conferences, etc.
Interprets for parents and staff the meaning of words and phrases.
Assists staff in phoning non-English speaking parents/guardians regarding curriculum, homework,
matters related to meetings and/or disciplinary concerns.
May perform written translations of IEPs, forms, communications and related documents.
May work independently with individuals or groups.
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Correct usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation in English and the designated home
language.
Technical terminology.
Acronyms and col oquialisms, idioms, regionalisms and slang in both English and the designated home
language.
Customer service strategies on how to approach families from a variety of ethnic backgrounds with
courtesy and respect.
Electronic communication devices that permit simultaneous interpretation.
ABILITY TO:
Learn simple methods and procedures to be fol owed in an educational setting.
Communicate, understand and work effectively with a variety of groups or individuals which may
include children.
Project a mature, constructive, stable and healthy attitude in an educational environment.
Understand and fol ow both oral and written instructions.
Handle confidential materials with discretion.
Establish and maintain effective working relations with students, teachers, parents and the general
public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school, passing the Stanislaus County Office of
Education Interpreter/Translator English and non-English exam and one year of experience
interpreting/translating English and a non-English language is preferred.
LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Driver’s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
Sitting for extended periods of time.
Seeing to read a variety of materials.
