CLASS TITLE:
Maintenance Technician / Carpenter

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor or designee, perform a variety of journey-level and skilled
work in the maintenance and repair of District facilities, vehicles, and equipment in conjunction with
specialized software; independently perform a variety of duties related to all building trades as assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform journey-level rough and finish carpentry work in the repair, renovation, construction, installation,
removal, and maintenance of District facilities; install, adjust, and modify building hardware; analyze
carpentry related issues, identify concerns, and adopt a practical course of action. Perform minor vehicle
maintenance (preventative maintenance and transportation to auto repair shop).
Perform a variety of highly skilled, routine maintenance and emergency repairs or adjustments to District
facilities, systems, vehicles, and equipment including carpentry, electrical, HVAC, glazing, painting,
fencing, plumbing, general construction, roofing, and other building trades work; assist other skilled and
semi-skilled trades personnel in the performance of a variety of technical jobs; respond to emergency
situations as assigned.
Perform maintenance and repairs of various District electronic equipment, including phone, camera, card
access, intercom, bell, and clock systems and perform data punch-downs and certifications; install and
maintain a variety of high and low-voltage circuits, including fire alarm systems, sprinkler controls, etc.
Operate a motor vehicle and trailer to haul and transport equipment, supplies and materials to and from
District and vendor sites; operate a variety of machinery, including bobcat, forklift, concrete grinder,
jackhammer, tools, and other equipment. May be required to weld.
Train and provide work direction and guidance to other maintenance staff as assigned; schedule and
coordinate maintenance projects with outside contractors.
Perform preventive maintenance on locks and hardware including cleaning, lubricating and tightening parts;
repair/replace doors and windows and perform routine installation of hardware; repair and replace locker and
locker parts.
Perform or assist other skilled personnel with troubleshooting, repairing or replacing switches, receptacles,
fans and motors, HVAC equipment, bells, lighting circuits, communication and other equipment.
Install, repair, or maintain various plumbing fixtures; removal and replacement of toilets, urinals, sinks,
water heaters, drinking fountains, faucets and fixtures and replacement of washers and gaskets.
Rebuild and repair various wood and metal structures, equipment, and furniture; identify health and safety
related issues; remove, prepare and install wall paneling, baseboards, and ceiling and floor tiles;
repair/replace siding, stucco and thin brick wall finishes.
Hang and tape sheet rock; prepare surfaces for painting and varnishing; remove or paint over graffiti;
assessments to determine causes of dry rot, moisture, and other deteriorating conditions.

Repair and maintain playground equipment; build forms, mix and pour and finish concrete and asphalt as
assigned.
Build and repair fences and gates; weld and repair metal furniture and fences; maintain and repair all door
systems.
Prepare estimates for various maintenance projects; maintain records of time, costs and materials needed in
the maintenance and repair of county office equipment and facilities.
Participate in various construction projects such as wall repair, remodeling offices and classrooms,
measuring, layout and installing cabinets and counter tops, and assembling furniture.
Participate in vehicle maintenance activities; transport vehicles to and from various vendors for oil changes,
vehicle recalls, and other related matters; perform various repairs on vehicles.
Identify and order needed parts and materials, track maintenance hours, materials, and expenses on specialized
software.
Assist with shipping and receiving activities; deliver supplies, furniture, and other items to various school
sites; unload trucks utilizing a forklift.
Repair roofs and clean gutters as assigned.
Assist with moving and reorganizing classrooms and offices as requested; assist with meeting room set up
activities.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Thorough knowledge of carpentry related equipment and tools, plumbing and pipe trade codes, methods, and
materials.
Principles and practices of training and providing work direction to others.
Standard tools, equipment, methods, techniques, and materials used in s general construction and one or
more of the building maintenance trades.
Operation and proper maintenance of hand and power tools, equipment and machinery used in the building
trades.
Requirements of maintaining building and equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
Preventive maintenance principles and practices.
Operation of computer equipment.
Basic knowledge of welding equipment and techniques.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Health and safety regulations and procedures.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
Hazmat, MSDS, and safety regulations and practices.
ABILITY TO:
Perform a variety of skilled work in the construction, renovation, maintenance and repair of building,

facilities, vehicles, equipment, and furniture.
Assist with training and provide work direction to others.
Work independently with little direction on assigned projects.
Operate various maintenance tools and equipment.
Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events.
Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
Maintain routine records related to work performed. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Understand and communicate effectively both orally and in writing and maintain consistent, punctual, and
regular attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from High School and experience in one or more of the maintenance
trades with five (5) years of increasingly skilled maintenance work related to building maintenance trade. Five (5) years
of commercial carpentry related experience or graduation from an approved carpentry apprenticeship program preferred.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid driver's license.
Employee must arrange their own transportation. If using own vehicle in the course of employment must
provide proof of insurance.
Within one year of assignment, Incumbents must obtain respirator certification to be provided by employer
Pre-employment lift test.
