Title of Position: Prison Education, Adult Basic Education/GED Teacher, Howard R. Young Correctional Institution (HRYCI)Reports to: Teacher/Supervisor of Level 5 Prison
Description of Position:
The Adult Basic Education Teacher, Prison Education Instructor is a member of the Prison Education Program and an employee of the Department of Education subject to all rules and procedures of the agency. This position delivers Adult Basic Education services to Level 5 offenders in preparation for a secondary credential, such as a GED®, and a successful reentry into the community.
Major Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized academic instruction that addresses the unique educational needs of adult inmate residents.
- Implement the Delaware Department of Education Adult Education curriculum, leading to a Certification of Attainment and/or GED® (which includes mathematics, reading and writing, science, and social studies) within a quality educational delivery system.
- Model best practices based on current research in the field of Adult Education,
- Monitor and maintain data to complete federal and state reports for assigned learners.
- Attend staff meetings and professional development trainings as needed.
- Participate on Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams as needed.
- Ensure that federal and state policies and procedures are followed in the classroom including but are not limited to WIOA – Title II, Perkins/Vocational, and /or IDEA.
- Work cooperatively with the Department of Correction to promote adult education opportunities upon the request of the Teacher/Supervisor, Prison Education.
- Function as part of an adult education services team to transition inmates into the community.
- Participate in Groves Curriculum Meetings to revise and develop content area curriculum.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Teacher/Supervisor, Prison Education.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
Education:
- Current Delaware Licensure (14 DE Admin Code 1500-Professional Standards Board)
- Current Delaware Certification in at least one content area on the high school level (14 DE Admin Code 1500 – Professional Standards Board)
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years (full time) academic teaching, experience in adult and/or correctional settings preferred
- Current certification in a high school level content area, e.g. Math, English Language Arts
Skills:
- Excellent written and oral communication, facilitation and organizational skills, as well as excellent listening and synthesizing skills.
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and negotiating skills.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to perform responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Capable of setting priorities and working in collaboration with others, and working under pressure.
- Be flexible and able to proactively problem-solve with professionalism.
- Discretion and confidentiality are essential.
Salary:
Salary will be computed in accordance with the education, experience, and training of the individual selected and in accordance with salary schedules for employees of the Department of Education. Direct deposit of payroll checks is a condition of state employment, and employees are paid on a lag pay schedule with the first payment made after approximately one month of employment.
