SCHOOL NURSE
STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION
CLASS TITLE:
School Nurse
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of an assigned administrator, provides school nursing services to school districts receiving or
contracting for direct services from the County Office of Education.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Consults with administrators, teachers, and other school personnel to develop objectives for a health program
which includes, but is not necessarily limited to, programs prescribed by the Education or Health and Safety
Codes.
Reviews health histories, observes students in classrooms and on playgrounds to identify health problems which
may affect the learning process.
Conducts or facilitates screening programs such as: vision, hearing, dental, immunization, scoliosis, physical
assessments and communicable diseases.
Interprets to parents any problems identified and refers to appropriate sources for diagnosis, care, and/or
recommendations. Assists parents with entry into health care system when needed.
Follows up on referrals from parents, teachers, and other health agencies.
Consults with teachers and other school personnel to plan adaptations of the educational program as indicated
by health problems.
Provides individual and group in-service instruction for teachers and parents in health and safety practices,
observation of students for health problems, community resources, and objectives of the total health program.
Serves as a resource for health education and may provide health education to classes upon request of the
teacher or school administrator.
Maintains a working relationship with public and private agencies providing health or related services to
children.
Collects statistical information on health service activities for purposes of budgeting, state reports, and research.
Supervises administration of medication to students and implements the school medication policy.
Supervises the emergency services programming, including administration of First Aid when in the school.
Assists in the identification of students in need of special programs.
Obtains by parent interview, preferably in the home, a complete health, development, and social history.
Serve as a member of the School Appraisal Team or Educational Assessment Service to provide assessment and
prescriptive programs for certain students.
Counsels with teachers, parents, and students to assist in follow-through on health-related recommendations.
Provides health services to students in self-contained classes.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:

Child growth and development
Handicapping conditions
School law related to a comprehensive Health Services Program.
ABILITY TO:
Coordinate and communicate effectively with peers, school and community personnel, and parents.
Provide in-service to staff
Maintain health records
Assess student medical needs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree.
Working with children (birth to 22) with disabilities is desirable.
LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California credential authorizing service as a school nurse.
Current California licensure as a registered nurse.
Current basic CPR certificate.
Nurse practioner’s license is required for an assignment in the CHDP program.
Pass an employer paid pre-employment physical/drug screening.
Department of Justice clearance.
Required to provide own transportation. If using own vehicle in the course of employment, must have valid
driver’s license and proof of insurance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Seeing to read instructional materials, rules and policies and other printed matter.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations.
Walking over rough and uneven terrain, play yards and school grounds.
Lifting carrying pushing and pulling light medium weighted objects.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
