STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION
CLASS: Vocational Food Service Instructional Assistant
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in the management of the Regional
Occupational Culinary Arts Program and supervise students in the preparation, service, and clean-up functions
of the program.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Assist in the planning of daily menus and adjusting of recipes for quantity production.
Order supplies, maintain an inventory and keep other related records.
Assist in the supervision of students in preparing, cooking, and baking of food for a la carte sales, school lunch,
buffets, and special events.
Operate food service equipment effectively and efficiently.
Supervise and assist students in the proper methods of service to include counter-cashier in a la carte operations
as well as dining room procedures and service.
Assist in the training of students in the preparation, cooking and handling of food.
Assist in the grading of students working in the food service classes.
Supervise and assist students in daily cleaning and maintenance of Food Service equipment and related
custodial work.
Participate in Food Service Advisory Committees and related Career Technical Education meetings.
Handle procedures involved in maintaining attendance records.
Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures; Assist with
conflict resolution according to established procedures; report progress regarding student performance and
behavior to teachers, probation officers, parents or other appropriate individual or agency according to
established guidelines.
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain
learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner.
Monitor the classroom in the absence of the teacher.
Assist students with developing positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Knowledge of quantity food preparation methods.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to food preparation and food service equipment.
Basic instructional methods and techniques.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Basic record-keeping techniques. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.
Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
ABILITY TO:
Interpret basic food terms and recipes.
Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a computer, copier.
Operate food service equipment in preparing large quantities recipes.
Practice safety habits and to follow sanitation rules.
Plan and direct students in their work.
Understand and implement oral directions and directions written in English.
Communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain health, sanitation and safety standards required by law.
Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Monitor, interview, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and
procedures.
Observe health and safety regulations.
Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities.
Work effectively with at-risk students.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of successful experience in food
service related fields.
LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Driver’s license
Must be NCLB compliant by: Hold an AA Degree or completion of two years of study (minimum of 48 units)
at an institution of higher education or pass a local academic assessment demonstrating knowledge of and the
ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
