Department Description
Under general supervision of the HVAC Plumbing Master Foremen, the Licensed Lead Oil Burner Mechanic supervises and performs?skilled work in the adjusting and servicing of temperature controls and in the maintenance and repair of oil burners and related heating equipment in the schools.? This is skilled work at the crew foreman level, involving specialized mechanical work requiring an advanced knowledge of heating equipment and systems.? Employees in this class frequently act as lead?on difficult or major projects; detailed instructions as to manner of performing each step are seldom given but work is checked on completion for satisfactory performance.

Detailed Description
Duties and Responsibilities: Checks, repairs, maintains and adjusts oil burners and associated equipment;Replaces belts on burners, induced draft fans and oil pumps, replaces bearings and re-aligns fan blade on induced draft fan, replaces seals and packing, aligns shaft on oil pumps, and replaces faulty or worn parts;Cleans and services burners and ignition assemblies; adjusts oil and air ratio;Checks oil burner controls, traces and finds shorts, checks fuses and line starters, checks connections, rewires faulty wiring on new controls, checks and repairs electrical motors;Sets, repairs and replaces stems and other parts of air stream thermostat; calibrates and repairs room thermostats; checks unit heaters and pneumatic values for leakage and proper operating efficiency; inspects adjusts and makes minor repairs to air compressors;During the summer season, assists in the flushing, cleaning, and test firing of all boilers; assists in repairs to fireboxes of heating plants, removing old bricks and installing new refactor materials;Enters materials, labor hours, status and details of work done into online work order management system;Fully implements the evaluation system for all Oil Burner Mechanics, Apprentices and Trades Helpers; andPerforms related work as required.
Job Requirements
Qualifications: Knowledge of technology (computer and/or mobile device) to enter materials, labor hours, status and details of the work done in the online work order management system;Thorough knowledge terminology, tools, materials, and practices of the oil burner and associated trades;Skill in the performance of heating tasks;Ability to work from blueprints;Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;Mechanical aptitude;Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator?s License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations while operating a Board of Education vehicle;Deemed as essential personnel; may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department; andKnowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions. Education and/or Experience Requirements: High school diploma required supplemented by a recognized apprenticeship in the trade; considerable experience as a journeyman, some of which shall have been at the level of Oil Burner Mechanic I. Certification: Sate of Maryland DLLR Stationary Engineers Second Grade Engineer Certificate required. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the work of Oil Burner Mechanics, Apprentices and Trades Helpers. Physical Demands: The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
