Department Description
The HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic I is responsible for performing technical tasks involved in operating, maintaining, installing and repairing a variety of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. The incumbent must read and interpret performance charts and control panels which reflect the efficiency of each piece of equipment in the system. This position performs work according to general or specific instructions, following guidelines for operation found in technical orders, manufactures' manuals, plans, specifications and instructions received from the HVAC-Plumbing Master Foreman. Work is reviewed daily through reports, logs and conferences with the supervisor.

Detailed Description
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:Participates in planning, servicing and scheduling the maintenance program for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and other building mechanical equipment;Participates in planning, servicing and scheduling the maintenance program from refrigeration equipment including: freezers, refrigerators, milk and water coolers;Requires electrical systems and replaces controls, switches and relays;Lubricates various parts of machinery and equipment periodically as required; replaces and adjusts fan belts and worn bearings;Repairs, calibrates and maintains pneumatic control and DDC systems;Repairs of HVAC pumps, piping, valves, steam traps and cooling towers;Inspects entire service area periodically to determine proper functioning condition and maintenance requirements; prepares maintenance records on equipment;Recommends to supervisor when he/she believes major repair is needed; andPerforms related work as required.
Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:Good knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures in the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment systems;Good knowledge of the common hazards, practices and safety precautions in the trade;Skilled in the use of hand and power tools used in the trade;Ability to operate equipment by starting, stopping, adjusting and setting controls as indicated by prescribed plans and specifications;Ability to estimate times and materials needed to complete a given task;Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; andDependability; willingness to work day or evening hours as required.EDUCATION and/or?EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:?High school graduate supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship or trade school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.?CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:?Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's license at the time of appointment; and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, which no more than three (3) shall have accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle (see Prince Georges County Public Schools' Bulletin P-1-88 dated July 21, 1987).?SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:?Acts as crew leader as assigned?PHYSICAL DEMANDS:?The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
