STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION
CLASS TITLE: Audiometrist
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned Director, conduct hearing screening in assigned schools; drive a mobile van
to various sites to conduct work; maintain records of results of hearing screenings; refer students with potential
hearing problems to the nurse according to established guidelines.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Conduct hearing screening in assigned schools; prepare and notify schools of scheduled date and time for
screenings; prepare packets and submit to schools according to established time lines; reschedule screenings as
needed.
Drive a mobile van to various sites to conduct work; conduct hearing screenings in the mobile van; assure
proper maintenance of the van; arrange for repair work as needed; clean, fuel and prepare work orders for
repairs as needed; drive the vehicle to repair shops as needed.
Operate a variety of medical instruments utilized in hearing screenings; assure proper operation of instruments
and arrange for repairs or replacements as needed; arrange for calibration of hearing equipment.
Communicate with school personnel, parents, students and others to exchange information, resolve issues or
concerns, explain and interpret test results and testing procedures, and to coordinate activities.
Record results of hearing tests and prepare referrals for students with potential hearing problems to the nurse
according to established guidelines; duplicate records of results and provide copies to the school.
Prepare and maintain records related to assigned activities including class lists of students tested and absent
students, referrals, mileage and other records as assigned.
Conduct and administer special screenings as needed.
Operate a computer and other standard office equipment as assigned.
Order forms, supplies and other materials as needed.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Audiometric screening techniques and instruments used in hearing screenings.
State requirements for hearing testing.
Impedance screening techniques.
Oral and written communication techniques.
Record-keeping techniques.
Operation of a computer and other office equipment.
County Office policies and procedures related to assigned activities.
Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and courtesy.
ABILITY TO:
Conduct hearing screening in assigned schools.
Drive a mobile van to various sites to conduct work.
Maintain records of results of hearing screenings
Communicate effectively with students.
Develop schedules involving multiple schools for hearing screenings.
Utilize hearing instruments to conduct hearing tests.
Operate a computer and other office equipment as assigned.
Work independently with little direction.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of hearing screening or related
experience is desirable.
LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.
Certification authorizing service as an Audiometrist.
ENVIRONMENT:
Mobile van environment.
Adverse weather conditions.
Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Hearing and speaking to conduct health screenings.
Seeing to monitor instruments.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate health screening instruments and a computer keyboard.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Climbing in and out of the van.
