Position Overview

Substitute teaching offers an opportunity to impact students in one of the most dynamic urban school districts in the country while maintaining schedule and location flexibility. As such, School Substitute Teachers are expected to maintain a professional attitude toward their work and always keep in mind the school district's mission. Effective School Substitute Teachers make a positive impact on students. Under the direction of the Principal and other administrative staff, School Substitute Teachers play a critical role in the daily delivery of high-quality instruction in the absence of a teacher or paraprofessional aide.

The School Building Substitute Teacher position is a school-funded, full-time position. School Building Substitute Teachers will report to one school each day of the 2026-2027 school year to support the needs of the school. The pay rate is $25/hour,and the NTE (not-to-exceed) date for this position is the last day of school in SY 2026-2027. An NTE date means that an individual can remain employed up to that specific date, but does not guarantee employment to that date.

This position has been designated asSafety Sensitive.Pursuant to section 410 of Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations; in addition to the general suitability screening, individuals applying for or occupying safety sensitive positions are subject to the following checks and tests: Criminal background check; Sex Offender Registry check; Pre-employment drug and alcohol test; Traffic record check (as applicable); Reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test; and Post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test.

The School Building Substitute Teacher will report to the Principal.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

• Follows the prepared lesson plan outlines for the course of study. Instructs students through instruction, demonstrations and/or audio- visual aids.
• Assigns lessons, corrects papers, hears oral presentations and may be called upon to administer test.
• Keeps attendance records. Maintains discipline in the classroom, playground, etc…
• Observes students to detect signs of illness and reports behavioral problems.
• Responsible for the maintenance of classrooms and all property assigned.
• Devises lesson plans in the assigned subject area provides a wide variety of experiences.
• Reports and discusses any problems encountered while performing assignments to the Principal.
• Observes the starting and dismissal times and all regulations of the D.C. Public School during the work day.
• Performs other related duties as assigned consistent with the position as may be requested by the Principal or other school administration.

Qualifications

• 60 or more credit hours in lieu of a conferred degree.
• Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
• Ability to help to implement reasonable rules for classroom behaviors and procedures.
• Ability to maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
• Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
• Ability to assist school administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
• One or two years’ experience working with students in a classroom setting (both unpaid and paid experiences should be considered).
