Position Overview

The Office of the Chief of Schools (COS) serves as a critical link between schools and Central Office by creating coherent, equitable structures and inspiring outstanding leadership. We ultimately ensure that all students are rigorously prepared for success in college, career, and life.

The Coordinator, Pathways is responsible for leading an individual school’s efforts to better meet the needs of alternative and comprehensive school students who are not yet on-track to graduate with their peers, in accordance with the direction and vision of the Office of the Chief of Schools. This school-based Coordinator will work with Director, Pathways who is based in the Central Office and other school-based staff to drive the work of engaging with our alternative student populations in new and different ways, meeting students’ socio-emotional needs as well as their academic needs.

The Coordinator’s work will focus primarily on the following areas:
  • Instructional planning, research, implementation, and monitoring: This includes researching alternative, innovative, and engaging approaches to teaching, learning, and student engagement/support in partnership with Director, Pathways based in the Central Office, other schools, and other offices; developing viable, high-quality plans to dramatically improve student success levels at the school level; and monitoring adoption and implementation of these innovative approaches.
  • Population monitoring: This includes monitoring a designated population of students in an alternative or comprehensive school to ensure all students receive the interventions, wrap-around supports and programming necessary to expedite progress toward graduation and programming.
  • Resource identification and development: This includes identifying and developing resources in support of the academic and social emotional growth of alternative student populations.
  • Professional development: This entails providing and/or facilitating effective professional learning and feedback to teachers and administrators in order to ensure all school staff are equipped to effectively serve the desired population.

    This position has been designated asSafety Sensitive.Pursuant to section 410 of Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations; in addition to the general suitability screening, individuals applying for or occupying safety sensitive positions are subject to the following checks and tests: Criminal background check; Sex Offender Registry check; Pre-employment drug and alcohol test; Traffic record check (as applicable); Reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test; and Post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test.

    The Coordinator, Pathways will report to the Principal.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Collaborates with Central Office and school-based staff to develop and execute viable and ethical plans to ensure that students achieve the academic and behavioral success they need in order to meet promotion targets.
    • Collaborates with other staff members to develop personalized promotion plans for all students in the designated population.
    • Ensures and documents that all students have set goals that will help them meet promotion targets, that all students are aware of exactly how to achieve these goals, and that all students are able to track their own progress toward these goals.
    • Works with students and other school staff to monitor promotion progress; relentlessly tracks the progress of all students and reports data to monitor school and student progress toward promotion targets.
    • Collaborates with external partners and other stakeholders, including families, students, teachers, counselors, social workers, deans, and administrators in order to ensure students receive the appropriate support and interventions, and that those supports are effective.
    • Executes results-focused classroom operations and resource management that ensure minimal disruptions to teaching and learning and promote the success of all students and staff.
    • Monitors progress of all marks, assessments, and conduct of students in the designated populations and meets with students to discuss progress and determine next steps.
    • Compiles documentation of school-wide efforts to support students in the designated population and coordinating referrals to other organizations and schools in concert with other school and Central Office staff.
    • Regularly and expertly reports on school-progress toward expressed expectations for the designated population.
    • Authentically engages in regular professional learning with other schools and Central Office staff.
    • Conducts ongoing analysis of and feedback on teachers’ grades, assessment results, and related planning decisions, and providing on-going professional learning, individual sessions, and team- development sessions based on the data.
    • Facilitates school-wide adoption of socio-emotional learning programs to support repeater populations.
    • Creates and leads opportunities for ongoing learning and staff development that are informed by student performance and provides staff feedback on efforts to serve struggling populations.
    • Conducts informal observations of alternative population students and teachers in order to inform program direction and success.
    • Coordinates related afterschool events, special events, and field trips.

    Qualifications

    • Master's degree.
    • At least two years of related work experience.
    • Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
    • Secondary teaching, educational counseling, or educational leadership experience strongly preferred.
