STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION

CLASS TITLE: Student Dormitory Assistant
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Director of Outdoor Education, provides overnight supervision of students and
volunteer counselors in the cabins at the outdoor education school; initiates and oversees recreational, social and
group living activities.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Provides overnight supervision of students in the cabins at the outdoor education school.
Initiates and oversees recreational, social and group living activities.
Assists in monitoring volunteer counselors and students during periods of time when other outdoor education
staff or classroom teachers are not directly in charge of student groups.
Monitors students and volunteer counselors in preparation for bed and morning rising.
Assists and counsels volunteer counselors having difficulty maintaining order and positive relations within
dorm groups.
Acts as a resource person for volunteer counselors (group games, stories, quiet time activities).
Responds to problems of students and counselors during sleeping hours.
Sleeps overnight in a dormitory.
Monitors packing and luggage movement when students are moving out.
Assists in maintaining safety precautions and standards in the dormitories.
Communicates problem areas with other outdoor education staff.
Provides first aid as necessary.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Recreation activities appropriate for Summer camp or outdoor school safety and logistical procedures.
Large group management skills.
Child development characteristics.
ABILITY TO:
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and outdoor education staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or High School Equivalent Certificate. Experience (paid or volunteer) working in an
instructional, community, clinic or home setting with elementary or middle school-aged children.
Experience with outdoor education programs, camps or youth-group activities is highly desirable.
LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


A current standard First Aid Certificate and CPR certification.
ENVIRONMENT:
Outdoor and indoor environment.
Seasonal heat and cold, and adverse weather conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Seeing to monitor students.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations.
Climbing hills while hiking.
Walking and standing for extended periods of time.
Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling light objects.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
