Description:
Archbishop Spalding High School is seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacherto work with high school students with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. Grounded in our Catholic mission of recognizing the inherent
dignity of every person, the Special Education Teacher delivers direct
instruction, adapts curriculum, and ensures students are fully integrated into
the academic, spiritual, and social life of the school.
Essential Functions:
Instruction & Curriculum Adaptation
* Adapt general education curriculum, assignments, and assessments to meet
students' individual functional and academic needs.
* Support students in general education courses by providing modified
curriculum and instructional accommodations.
* Teach specialized small-group classes in functional literacy, practical
mathematics, and life skills.
* Provide one-on-one instructional support as needed.
* Assist students with transitioning between classes.
Case Management & Planning
* Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs).
* Conduct ongoing assessments to track progress toward academic, social, and
post-secondary transition goals.
Classroom Inclusion & Collaboration
* Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure access to coursework
through effective modifications and differentiated instructional strategies.
* Support and guide peer mentors within inclusive classroom settings.
Family & Multidisciplinary Communication
* Maintain regular communication with parents, school counselors,
administrators, and external therapists to support student growth and
transition planning.
Student Support & Extracurricular Integration
* Facilitate student participation in school retreats, clubs, athletics, and
campus events, promoting self-advocacy and independence across all school
environments.
Position Qualifications
Education
* Bachelor's degree in Special Education required; Master's degree preferred.
* Maryland State Certification in Special Education, or eligibility for
certification, preferred.
Experience
* Minimum of 3-5 years of experience teaching students with intellectual and
developmental disabilities, preferably at the middle or high school level.
* Experience in a private or Catholic school setting is preferred.
Skills
* Demonstrated expertise in curriculum modification, functional skills
development, positive behavior supports, and parent communication.
* Strong collaboration, organization, and interpersonal communication skills.
REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
* Must complete all required Archdiocesan background checks and child
protection training (VIRTUS).
* Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding student records.
* Willingness to support and participate in campus ministry events, retreats,
open houses, and other school activities.
Pay Range: $60,000 - $70,000, Annualized
