The Pegasus School seeks an enthusiastic and student-centered Long-Term Substitute Physical Education Teacher to join our community for an anticipated assignment from November 16, 2026 through mid-February 2027.
This position will teach physical education to students in Grades 3 through 8 and work closely with members of the Lower School and Middle School teams to provide continuity in the School’s physical education program. The ideal candidate enjoys working with upper elementary and middle school students, brings positive energy to the learning environment, and is skilled at creating inclusive experiences that help students develop confidence, physical skills, teamwork, and healthy habits.
Position Details
The Long-Term Substitute Physical Education Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction that promotes physical fitness, skill development, sportsmanship, cooperation, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
Working within the School’s existing physical education program, the substitute teacher will provide consistent instruction and classroom routines throughout the assignment while adapting activities to meet the developmental needs and abilities of students in Grades 3 through 8.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Plan and deliver engaging physical education lessons aligned with the School’s existing curriculum and program goals.
- Teach fundamental movement skills, individual fitness activities, cooperative games, team sports, cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and other age-appropriate physical activities.
- Create an inclusive environment in which students of varying skill levels can participate successfully, build confidence, and experience growth.
- Reinforce the value of physical fitness, healthy habits, teamwork, perseverance, fair play, and good sportsmanship.
- Establish clear expectations and maintain effective routines for student behavior, participation, and safety.
- Provide appropriate instruction, demonstrations, feedback, and modifications based on students’ developmental needs and abilities.
- Monitor students closely during physical activity and maintain a safe environment during classes and transitions.
- Assess student participation, skill development, and progress as appropriate within the existing program.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues, Division Directors, and other members of the School community.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and model the School’s expectations for respectful and responsible behavior.
- Perform other related responsibilities associated with supporting the physical education program during the assignment.
Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate an ability to create a positive, organized, and engaging learning environment for upper elementary and middle school students.
Preferred qualifications include:
Bachelor’s degree in physical education, kinesiology, education, sports science, or a related field.
Teaching credential, substitute teaching permit, or other appropriate California authorization.
Previous experience teaching physical education, coaching, or working with school-age children.
Experience working with students across a range of developmental and athletic abilities.
Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to differentiate activities so that students with varying skill levels can participate meaningfully and safely.
A collaborative, flexible, and student-centered approach.
Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification if required.
Prior experience teaching in an independent school or Grades 3–8 environment is helpful but not required.
This position requires regular physical activity and the ability to teach in both indoor and outdoor environments. The employee must be able to demonstrate physical activities, move throughout instructional spaces, supervise active groups of students, and respond appropriately to student safety needs. Classes may take place outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required pre-employment clearances and documentation, including fingerprint/background clearance and tuberculosis screening, as required by law and School policy.
Compensation and Schedule
The rate of pay is $210 per day.
Anticipated Assignment: November 16, 2026 through mid-February 2027
Grade Levels: Grades 3–8
Schedule: Full-time during the regular school day
